In my experience, technology training becomes significantly more effective when tailored to a client’s specific examples rather than relying on generic scenarios. By using real-world cases relevant to the client’s industry, workflow, or challenges, we can address specific pain points, demonstrate practical solutions, and then implement these solutions. This personalized approach not only enhances engagement but also ensures that learners can directly apply their newfound knowledge in their workplace.

During a recent SharePoint training session, I had the opportunity to work with a client who had some users that were new to SharePoint while others had some experience. Instead of relying solely on the examples and topics in the standard training manual, I decided to use some of their existing sample lists, currently maintained in Excel and documents, managed on a server. We explored their actual use cases, discussing how SharePoint lists and document libraries could enhance their workflow. By using their real-world examples, we went beyond the textbook scenarios and delved into practical scenarios they would encounter. This approach not only elicited meaningful conversations from all users, both experienced and novice, but also allowed me to effectively teach course topics.

By the end of the session, all users felt more confident in using SharePoint, and they appreciated the personalized guidance. It reinforced the importance of adapting training to meet an individual client’s needs and leveraging their own context for a richer learning experience.
